Dark home? No problem... We've got you covered, no really. Don't let the ellipsis fool you; we'll spill the dirt on those green things you call... houseplants.

In case you didn't know, a happy plant starts with its primary food source; no, it's not the fertilizer, soil, or water... it's light.

But it raises a few questions from the plant-lover with no light source in their home: "What kind of plants could survive in my dark, less than ideal apartment with only one window?"

So now we'll get to the good stuff...what you actually came to this page for...the low-light beauties, the plants with a dark side; in our expert opinion, here are the top plants that will thrive and stay alive:

THE PLANT LIST

Low-Light Houseplants (For the dim and cozy spaces):

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

This one’s the low-maintenance friend who always shows up looking great. Chinese Evergreen is known for its colorful leaves and chill attitude. It does best when the top inch of soil dries out between waterings, and it's more than content in low to medium light—perfect for busy plant parents.

– Easygoing and colorful. Water when the top inch of soil dries out.

Bamboo (Dracaena Sanderiana)

Technically part of the Dracaena family, Bamboo (often called Lucky Bamboo) is a unique one. Unlike its sun-loving cousins, this variety thrives in low light and prefers its soil to be consistently moist. It’s the mellow member of the Dracaena bunch—just keep it away from direct sun, and it’s happy.

– This easy-care plant grows well in low light; keep the soil moist and avoid direct sunlight.

Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane)

Dieffenbachia is the adaptable one in the group. It can handle lower light and prefers its soil to stay damp—but not soggy. Give it the right balance, and its bold, patterned leaves will bring personality to any corner.

– Can handle lower light. Keep soil damp, but avoid letting it sit in water.

Dracaena (Dracaena Spp.)

The Dracaena clan is vast and varied, but many members love filtered light and drier conditions. Water only when the topsoil is dry and avoid heavy-handed hydration. Some varieties are more sun-seeking than others, so observe your plant and adjust accordingly.

– Prefers filtered light. Water when the topsoil is dry and avoid overwatering.

Parlor Palm/Neanthabella Palm (Chamaedorea Elegans)

Think of this one as the vintage soul of the group. A favorite since Victorian times, the Parlor Palm thrives in shade and loves a lightly moist environment. Mist it occasionally and it’ll bring laid-back tropical vibes to your space.

– Loves shade. Keep the soil lightly moist and mist occasionally.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Peace Lily is dramatic in the best way. When it’s thirsty, it’ll droop its leaves in protest—but give it a drink and it perks up in no time. It enjoys a bit of moisture and does well in medium light. Plus, its white blooms bring a peaceful presence to any room.

– Likes a little moisture. Water, when the leaves start to droop, and it will perk right back up.

Philodendron Cordatum (Philodendron Hederaceum Var. Oxycardium)

The romantic viner. With heart-shaped leaves and a trailing habit, this philodendron loves bright, indirect light and slightly moist soil. It's fast-growing and forgiving, making it a favorite for shelves, hanging baskets, and anywhere that needs a little love.

– Trailing and graceful. Keep soil slightly moist and provide bright, indirect light.

Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

Pothos is your ride-or-die plant—it’ll tolerate just about anything. Let the top inch of soil dry before watering, and trim the vines to keep it lush. It adapts to low, medium, or bright indirect light, which is why it’s a must-have for beginners and seasoned plant lovers alike.

– A trailing beauty. Water when the top inch of soil is dry and trim vines to keep them full.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Snake Plant is the definition of low-key. It thrives on neglect, prefers to dry out completely between waterings, and tolerates anything from low to bright light. If you forget about it for a while, no hard feelings—it’ll still be there, looking sharp.

– Thrives on neglect. Water every few weeks and let the soil dry out thoroughly between waterings.

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

ZZ Plant is the superhero of the low-maintenance world. Practically indestructible, it stores water in its thick rhizomes and only needs a drink when the soil is bone dry. It prefers indirect light but can survive in low light too. A great choice for those who want green without the worry.

– Practically indestructible. Water when the soil is completely dry, and avoid direct sun.
